Said and Ahin’s youngest daughter, Bissan, two, was the last of the migrant children born in the British military hospital in Akrotiri. On the day she was born the hospital received a call from the SBA immigration saying healthcare was now the responsibility of the Cyprus Republic. Bissan’s mother Ahin was told to leave, moments after Bissan had been diagnosed with a hole in her heart. ‘The nurse told me to forget about the British hospital and never go there again,’ says Ahin. ‘We can’t afford private Cypriot healthcare for her so she doesn’t get regular checkups for her heart condition.’ Since then all children born to the residents of Richmond Village are now delivered in Cypriot hospitals.
