‘Our house was burnt in the fighting and we lost all our documents’, adds Evin. ‘We made our way across the border into Syria, and then walked for four hours to reach Lebanon. My husband gave all our savings to the fishing boat to take us to what we thought would be Italy. We were at sea for two days, and my daughter Layla was born on the boat. Then water began filling the boat and we could see flames from the engine. I thought my baby and I would die at sea.’
