After the British transferred the families out of detention and into Richmond Village in 2000, other illegal migrants began to move into the Bases, having entered Cyprus through the Turkish-controlled north of the island. They remained in Richmond Village for seven years, enjoying free housing but no legal status and living alongside the original boat people who had arrived in 1998.
