There are many Kurdish asylum seekers and refugees in Cyprus who have fled persecution in Syria, Iraq and Turkey, some of which have complained of police violence, illegal arrests and detention by the Cypriot authorities. Since Cyprus’ entry into the European Union in May 2004 it has been reviewing its immigration procedures.
